The organization will provide four agencies with financial and technical support for the initiation of developmental projects.
The Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO recently held a cheque presentation ceremony that will provide four agencies with financial and technical support for the initiation of developmental projects.
The cheque, totaling EC$201,615, is part of the UNESCO Participation Program, and will support activities in the fields of Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communications and Technology.
The first project will implement UNESCO Global Micro-Science Experiments. The second project will be a national symposium and policy handbook on the teaching and learning of Mathematics. The third project will produce a documentary on women in politics in Saint Lucia; and the fourth aims to build local capacity in the use of science, technology and innovation for the demarcation and sustainable management of protected areas.
Secretary General of UNESCO, Marcia Symphorien Laurent, said the developmental projects enhance UNESCO’s mission.
“Essentially, today will signal the official start of the implementation of these projects that have been granted funding, and we are very pleased to be able to present those cheques to the Department of Gender Relations, the Piton Management Area office, and the Ministry of Education for two projects—one in Mathematics and the other in Science.
"I want to congratulate all of the implementing agencies who submitted and continue to show an interest in the work of the Commission.”
Minister for Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development, Hon. Dr. Gale Rigobert, said the initiative will significantly impact the lives of Saint Lucians.
“Very often we think there is a shortage of resources, but I believe that there are resources that we simply have to reach out and tap into. I want to thank those of you who took the time and made the effort to table your applications. Here we are as proud recipients—a testimony to the value of the work that you put in and an indication of the level of importance that UNESCO has placed on the work that you are proposing to undertake.”
